About Us

The Presbyterian Church of Wales has 30,000 members and 700 churches across Wales, as well as links with churches abroad.

Aims

Our purpose is to worship God and spread the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We seek to achieve this by preaching the Gospel, administering the sacraments and praying. We provide pastoral care as well as religious Biblical education. We undertake missionary work at home and abroad and we stress the need to engage in practical activity and to set an example of Christian life.

We seek to take a stand for justice and peace in our world, and we try to safeguard our environment in every possible way.

History

For information concerning the history of the Church, see the History Department.

Structure

Each church within the Presbyterian Church of Wales is accountable to a presbytery, a regional body which meets on a quarterly basis. There are 14 presbyteries, and each is responsible for planning the ministerial and missionary work within its boundaries. Presbyteries may also supervise calls to ministers, ordain elders and supervise the work of the Sunday School and the young people.

The presbyteries are divided into three associations: the Association in the South, the Assocation in the East and the Association in the North. These meet on a roughly bi-annual basis in order to supervise and endorse the work of the presbyteries. They are also responsible for ordaining ministers.

The annual focal point of the Presbyterian Church of Wales is the General Assembly, which is held for three days in September (2008 onwards). The General Assembly has a Moderator, who is elected annually.

There are three boards of the General Assembly: the General Assembly Board, the Life and Witness Board and the Resources Board. There are a number of panels and departments within every board, and each is responsible for an aspect of the Church’s life and work.

The Central Office of the Presbyterian Church of Wales is based in Cardiff. The Office Staff are responsible for the administration of the Church. The Office is managed by the General Secretary, who is accountable to the General Assembly.
