Mizoram Famine
Although news of
the famine in the Indian state of Mizoram has not exactly hit the
headlines, a freakish phenomenon known locally as Mautam has been
wreaking havoc on residents' lives.
Every 48 years the
ubiquitous bamboo flowers heavily, attracting hordes of rats. The
vermin then go on to destroy farmers' crops, resulting in famine. Further
information on the causes and nature of the famine can be found on
the
Nerve (News of India) and
BBC websites.
This famine is
naturally a great cause for concern for our sister church, the
Mizoram Presbyterian Church Synod. The Synod Social Front has
issued circulars to encouraging the local churches to establish
self-help groups to help those in need during the famine. However,
they are unable to provide support in all areas due to lack of
funding. The Synod also aims to provide seeds to the farmers as well
as sustaining the people during the year of the famine.
