Reverend Ifan Roberts, General Secretary of the
Presbyterian Church of Wales, has expressed his
wish to see growth in all areas of the Church in
2010.
Speaking on
BBC Radio Cymru's Bwrw Golwg programme, Reverend
Roberts said that any church leader would want
growth.
"I'd
like to see growth in faith and conviction
withint the church family, and a readiness to
nurture spiritual growth through prayer, worship
and reading the Bible," he noted. "And through
this, growth in the way we serve our communities
and our world by standing for justice and peace
and carrying out acts of love."
"I would also
like to see growth in confidence in the face of
the secularism of the age, that there is more to
life than the material, and that the gospel of
Jesus Christ meets all our needs."
He also drew
attention to a particular problem facing
Welsh-medium churches - lack of new resources.
"We need our imaginations to grow so we can
produce new resource and use today's media to
present the message," he said. "This is a
particular challenge for Welsh churches. And to
face this challenge we must listen to and use
the young generation of Christians.
"Growth of
leadership is another key area. We need to
encourage and develop new leadership in our
churches so that they can lead the church's
vision and mission to the future.
"And finally,
the byproduct of all this will hopefully be
growth in terms of numbers. This is our prayer:
that God will renew the church through his Holy
Spirit. But we must ensure that the church
itself does not deter people from belonging to
it."
