Christian leaders: Concern about threats to University Departments

Closing five department at Bangor University would undermine Welsh- language education and would be a heavy blow to academia, according to three Welsh Christian leaders who are calling on the University Council to drop the plans.

The General Secretaries of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, the Union of Welsh Independents and the Baptists' Union of Wales are particularly concerned about the future of the Theology and Religious Studies Department. In a time when a clear understanding of Wales' traditional Christianity and other minority religions is needed, it is amazing that Bangor University is even considering closing the Department, said the three in a letter to the university's Vice-Chancellor. The University Council is expected to discuss the future of the departments before the end of this month.
